Hunter and Rain Bird Compatibility and System Sizing

Hunter and Rain Bird components can sometimes be mixed, but compatibility depends on the exact interface and model. Product-family names alone are not enough: confirm the part number and the current manufacturer documentation before ordering.

How to size irrigation valves

Start with the total zone flow at the required operating pressure. Check the valve's published flow range and pressure-loss chart. Rain Bird's design guidance recommends keeping valve loss below 10% of available static pressure and generally using a valve the same nominal size as the largest lateral pipe, or no more than one nominal size smaller. Avoid oversizing without checking minimum reliable flow.

How to size an irrigation controller

Count every independently controlled station, including master valves or pump-start functions where applicable. Then check:

  • AC, battery or solar power.
  • Conventional multi-wire or two-wire/decoder architecture.
  • Stations required now and planned expansion.
  • Sensor and flow-monitoring inputs.
  • Local, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or central-control operation.
  • Outdoor enclosure and surge-protection requirements.

How to size an irrigation pump

A pump must satisfy the design point: required flow at total dynamic head. Total dynamic head includes static lift, required outlet pressure, friction through pipe, fittings, filters and valves, and elevation differences. Motor power alone does not define suitability. Confirm suction conditions, water quality, duty cycle, electrical supply, protection and whether variable-speed control is required.

Pipe velocity and pressure loss

Rain Bird's design material uses a 1.5 m/s velocity guideline to reduce surge risk and excessive friction. Final pipe size must be checked against the actual flow, length, material, fittings and acceptable pressure loss.
